Paper:

Whenever possible, buy full sheets(56cm x 76cm) and I will show you how to tear into four pieces to get 1/4 sheets.~(28 X 38CM)
Watercolour paper comes in weights. Get 140 lbs or 300 gm minimum weight to prevent buckling.

Cold Press paper (has bumps) 140 lb minimum. Need 2 full sheets minimum
Hot Press paper (smooth) 140 lb minimum. Need 1 full sheet minimum

Some Big Brands are: Arches, Waterford/Saunders, Winsor Newton , Fabriano
Minimum size 1/4 sheet( 9.75” x12”) or close to as possible.

Portfolio:

As lightweight as possible, to which you will tape watercolour paper

Minimum size 42cm x 31cm ( 16in. x 12in.) Best would be 46cm x 36cm (18in x 14in)
Two Formats for Portfolio:
Portrait, will have seam at the top(narrow edge)
Landscape will be on the wide part.*** Landscape is the most versatile. ***

Bear Clip or Legal Clip to hold Portfolio closed
****Failing loose sheets of paper and a portfolio one could use good quality heavy weight Watercolour "Blocks." They are more expensive and you have to carry the complete block.

Brush:

ONE good Watercolour natural fibre brush.

The brush should be capable of wide strokes and also come to a good point.

Sable are very good but very expensive.

An oriental brush made out of natural fibres or squirrel is very good and inexpensive.

Synthetic brushes do not hold much paint.

After the initial Absolute Beginners Workshop, you can use more brushes if you desire, but we only use one for this workshop.

If you fall in love with this medium, treat yourself to a sable brush.

If you are only going to get one, get a size 10.

If you want to spoil yourself, get a size 8.

For ultimate spoiling also get a “rigger”( for thin fine lines).

Palette:

A folding plastic Palette is perfect for this workshop and for travelling.

(Again, you can spend hundreds on a palette).

This is a great start for you.

The Palette should have an areas to hold the paints and an
area to mix the colours.

(If all else fails, get a couple of white plates).
